Feb 2, 2009:
I've begun work on a piece with James Gnam for the plastic orchid factory.
This will be a re-mount of a previously completed piece called sub(text), in the course of which it will be transformed into an evening-length work with all original music.
The premiere is in July at the Norman Rothstein Theatre as part of the Dancing on the Edge Festival.
May 2, 2008:
The gluttony piece I was working on last August (see below) will make its Vancouver premiere May 9 as part of the PULSE festival.
August 2, 2007:
I'll be working with choreographer Sara Coffin and the dance company SINS (Sometimes In Nova Scotia) at the Ross Creek Arts Centre to create a piece based on the theme of gluttony. This will eventually form part of a series of works, each dedicated to one of the seven deadly sins.
There will be a showing on Aug 24 at the Centre, and a showing in Halifax the following evening.
April 2, 2007:
A couple of recent activities: I participated in Sara Coffin's DanceLab project at the Scotiabank
Dance Centre. The showing was Mar 16. Coming out of that, I worked with one of the dancers from that project,
Jennifer Clarke, making a soundtrack for a dance presented at
Blim on March 29. Jennifer and I got some good feedback on our little piece, which we plan to keep
working on. Watch this space for further updates.
December 31, 2006:
I did a version of John Cage's Variations III for Vancouver New Music's John Cage festival.
It was originally in 4 channels (using two networked computers, each looking after 2 of the 4 channels), but I also made a stereo mix.
You can find it on the sounds page.
I also appeared on CFRO's Soundscapes show, where I was interviewed and asked to play a recording of my piece.
I also brought in 2 other versions of the same piece by 2 other artists, and read from some of Cage's written works.
I have a recording, but don't want to post it here. Drop me a line if you're interested.
Happy New (Y)ear!
July 1, 2006:
Nothing much to report. I've been doing some stuff with MAC, which is the Media Arts Committee of
Vancouver Co-operative Radio, CFRO, 102.7 FM, and the occasional shift at Video In. I may also be
involved with Vancouver New Music's Cage Festival this coming October.
November 10, 2005:
The Computational Poetics project I was working on is done and now showing at the
Surrey Art Gallery
till December, I believe.
And my residency at Co-op is done. The pieces can be heard at MAC's
new website. They received their broadcast premiere on CFRO a few months ago.
I'm not volunteering at VCN anymore, but I am doing an internship at
Video In, and having a blast.
June 3, 2005:
Having left school, now I'm
working at school! I'm doing some editing for the
Computational Poetics
project at SFU,
which is putting together a piece
for the
Surrey Art
Gallery in honour of their anniversary.
I'm also artist in residence (though I call myself composer in residence) at CFRO,
Vancouver Co-operative Radio in Vancouver.
For this residency, I'll be making recordings in various parts of Vancouver covered by the broadcast area of Co-op Radio
and then constructing a piece from those recordings.
I just picked up some equipment today, and I'll be starting the recordings shortly.
The piece will most likely be broadcast and released internationally on a CD.
And, in order to enhance my computing knowledge and experience,
I've also applied to volunteer one day a week at Vancouver Community Net,
which is "a community-owned provider of internet tools and services for sharing the broadest range of information,
experience, ideas, and wisdom." I'm looking forward to working on these projects.
April 9, 2005: Not only is my grad project presentation completed (and it seems it was a smash hit), but I successfully defended my project on April 4! So, once I get my project documentation in, I am done with school, for the time being at least. Still haven't decided on what the next step is, but some kind of doctoral degree is no more than a few years down the road. For now, though, I'm enjoying the freedom from the demand for constant productivity which goes along with being in school. Aside from being under the pressure of that demand for the past 3 years, I've been making my own music in some form since I was 9 years old; methinks it's time for a bit of a break! I'm going to be spending more time on the theory end of things, doing lots of reading and writing and thinking about things. Feb 17, 2005: The date for my grad show is finally set for March 19th, 8 PM at Video In! It's been a kafuffle and a half to actually get a date set, but it's all over now. My defense date is set for April 4. I no longer have a piece in the March 18 concert, but I will be presenting a piece at Sonic Boom on March 12 (ironically, on the night I was originally going to have my grad project). Jan 30, 2005: Recently, I played at BLIM. It was fun, but due to another show on the same night, attendance was *ahem* rather low. I was, however, perfectly happy, as it was still more people than I usually play for (i.e., zero). My next show, I guess, is my grad project presentation, which is March 19, and then my thesis defence is in early April. | |
